Tylehurst is within easy walking distance of the prehistoric Clava Cairns. Less than half a mile from the house, the three main cairns sit in a small wooded enclosure, peaceful yet somehow impressive testimony to the abilities of our forefathers 4000 years ago.

Not far away is Culloden Muir, site of the last battle fought on British soil. Here the dreams of the Stuart kings were buried and in the aftermath, the old clan system which was already crumbling, was destroyed forever. Many Gaels had to leave their native glens and flee to the lowland cities and to the Americas. Their ancestors still return today, seeking their roots.

Within an hour's drive are a host of things to do and see - Cawdor Castle, Loch Ness and the Monster exhibition at Drumnadrochit, the CairnGorm Mountain Railway, the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie, the Strathspey Whisky Trail. The choice is yours  - something for every taste.

And you can reach the West Coast at Applecross to look over to Skye, or drive to Torridon or Ullapool and back in a day.

And for the more adventurous, drive up to Scrabster or John O'Groats and take the early morning ferry to the Orkneys. Puffin Express (puffinexpress.co.uk) or John O' Groats Ferries (jogferry.co.uk) offer all-day packages.
