Tylehurst nestles in the snug fermtoun of Clava, in Strathnairn – peaceful, rural – yet not more than 6 miles from the centre of Inverness, the bustling capital of the Highlands. Perched on a terrace overlooking the River Nairn, which runs behind the house, and facing South-East it is sheltered from northerly winds by the neighbouring house and a line of trees on the slope running down to the Nairn. The original cottage with its two-foot thick walls was most likely a ‘but and ben’ (two-roomed cottar-house). This has been extended to the rear to provide spacious and comfortable accommodation for four.

The cottage was fully renovated 2003/2004 and has oil-fired central heating and double glazing throughout.

In Spring the local roads are at their best - lined with the yellow bloom of gorse.

Within easy walking distance are both the prehistoric Clava Cairns and the battlefield of Culloden. Further afield, yet less than hour’s drive away are Loch Ness, Cawdor Castle (Macbeth!), Findhorn Bay and Culbin Sands Forest, the Strathspey Distillery Trail and the CairnGorm Mountain Railway.

There is an excellent beach at Nairn, good walking and birdwatching in the surrounding forests and moorlands, some 10 golf courses within an hour’s drive, fishing in the rivers and lochs (permit often required—check with Inverness Tourist Board) and opportunities to see the dolphins from Chanonry Point near Fortrose.

And always a friendly, warm and comfortable cottage to return to.
